Isaiah 58

God, Justice, and Mission

Why do I care without justice?

As Christians and the church, are there any reasons we should be concerned about justice? We all have a desire for justice; for fairness.

The character of God

Our instinct for justice is rooted in the character of God and the fact that we are made in His image. God is a God of justice, and Jesus is His tool for justice in our world.

God's character is one of Righteousness, Justice, Love, and Faithfulness. God's love for us is lavish and faithful and never gives up. He is also honest, impartial, and intervenes when there is injustice. It is clear that God's love for us drives His motivation for justice in our world.

We should mirror these characteristics in our own lives - to bring God's peace to the world around us.

True worship includes a concern for justice

The passage is in the context of a return from exile. We see that as they celebrate, the people move away from a longing for justice. They oppressed others, and fought amongst each other.

What they missed what that they had been saved from injustice, yet did not practice justice themselves.

The light of the world

God's method of justice is through His son, Jesus, and the death that took our punishment upon Him so we can be saved.

Our salvation allows for us to be agents of justice in the name of God. To love those around us and seek justice for them at any cost. Through that action we can show the righteous, loving, faithful, and just God.

The promise of justice

Isaiah promises that as justice is done by those who know God, in the name of God, then the glory of God will be revealed, and as we worship a foundation will be set for hope. God is needed for a world that needs justice.
